* the "Little Zines" are an origami form that with one cut partially through the center fold down to a small multi-paged zine. they are made of a regular sized sheet of paper and can be taken anywhere and made without need for any staples or glue. This story has been extended into a longer more details one. Much of the art on the "my art" page is from this extended story. * Little Fire * * what the whole page looks like * * Little Fire was so small and so insignificant that as she passed hardly anyone noticed. She didn’t mind. She liked to look at the other sides of things, such as the undersides of comets tails to see what might be hitching a ride rather than just the icy opalescence that entranced everyone on its surface. Being so small she did not always hear what everyone was demanding of each other, and how they critically assessed the sharpness and fiery qualities of everyone else’s flares. She could have stood still enough to let the words float down to her, but she noticed that no one looked very happy and all started to look the same. Their sameness was glorious though- golden shining fiery works of artful flame- some were born that way- others had things attached and enhanced. As pretty as it was, it still all looked the same to her. Little Fire on the other hand burned a cool twinkling Blue. Yes she wanted to be made a Sun too, but wouldn’t it be lovely to be a Blue Blue Sun- bright like a Blue drop of crystalline sky. Of course some that looked down laughed or pitied or criticized- "You will never be a Sun! Suns don’t look like you, they need to be golden and huge, and fill the sky!" * * Everyone wanted to be a Sun. Being a Sun meant you helped grow crops and flowers and made people happy and warm, and gave them energy- and life.. everyone wanted to be a Sun. She was told it was a noble thing, it was the only thing that mattered. Little Fire wanted to help, she wanted to make people happy, but she just was not born so big and so glittery. She burned Blue, she would not fill a sky with radiance, but she felt inside her that she could make people happy- she could give something. The front runners for Suns laughed, some weren’t cruel, but it still didn’t feel nice. Suns age, and they are taken away in a big blaze of light and celebration to thank them before they move on to the next level that a Sun travels in the Universe. This was a big mystery to her, but she did not waste time thinking of where Suns go, but rather what they did while they Shined. It was time for a new Sun. The Big Keeper Of The Skies came to choose the new Sun, the new one to shine down and be loved. When the time came it was wondrous- all the flames burning, all the gold shining, all the glittering blinding, she was dazzled herself! The Keeper reached down and picked, not her, but a gorgeous sparkling fire, now a Sun of supreme beauty and radiant color. Little Fire watched as the chosen Sun was lifted above everyone else and placed in the sky to reign over the new world. She smiled in her tears, she felt joy for the new Sun. Little Fire was born how she was, and she realized that even if a Sun could not be blue, she was still happy that she was not just a leftover mass of gold flame with everyone else. * * As the fires began to leave to continue to burn and wait, The Great Keeper Of The Skies proclaimed it needed one more fire. In all the fires burning bright, there was one that did not blur into the others. When the Great Keeper Of The Skies reached down for Its new light in the firmament- it saw a blue fire burning hot and said "THIS Fire is the new point, this is the new one by which the ships will be guided- this IS the new Evening Star." The Little Blue Fire felt herself rise above all the others. They watched and smiled- even they saw the beauty of her. Even though she did not become the Sun, making the crops grow and the people shade their eyes, she would become a comfort to those numbers of people who sailed the seas at night, and who gazed up at the nighttime sky and wondered about many things. She would be there to shine a small yet intensely beautiful light upon them. She will be there for them to look to when all colors have faded, and no one else is around or awake, and that, is a most noble thing. *
